Year Three is an exciting year with some particularly engaging History topics. Children become much more independent now that they are in Key Stage 2 and demonstrate this by managing school routines and looking after their belongings. For more specific details on this, please read Year 2 to Year 3 Transition.

The Year Three Curriculum
Learning comes to life through memorable experiences including trips and hands-on projects. Our children go deeper within and make connections between each subject, building on knowledge and skills from prior learning.
In Reading our focus shifts more towards comprehension as the children are now more confident in decoding words. We encourage parents to discuss
books with the children to support this. Non-fiction books are as important as fiction and we are keen for children to enjoy a wide variety of texts. We regularly plan independent writing sessions into our English lessons to increase children's writing stamina and apply any new learning about language or sentence structure. Grammar lessons are built into our units, often themed around a particular book or stimulus. We also link writing to our current topic wherever possible.
Maths in Year 3 is mostly about securing understanding of place value of numbers up to 1000, then mastering mental and written strategies for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. It is very important that the children start to learn their times tables in Year 3 and recall them at speed. We do short, timed tests regularly and have we have subscriptions to two websites to support the children’s Maths learning at home; TT Rockstars focuses on improving speed and accuracy of times tables recall and MyMaths features interactive activities to practise the whole maths curriculum. We set weekly MyMaths homework linked to our work in class.
