Mental Health & Wellbeing
Good mental health and wellbeing are are key components of a healthy life, for both children and adults. We want our pupils, their families and our staff team to thrive: to feel confident in themselves and have positive self-esteem; to recognise and express a range of emotions; to build and maintain good relationships with others; to feel engaged with the world around them; and to successfully overcome challenges when they arise.
You will find information below about how we develop this in school as well as links and resources for more help and information.
Executive Functioning
Executive functioning refers to a set of mental skills that help children manage their thoughts, emotions, and actions. These skills include things like planning, focusing attention, remembering instructions, controlling impulses, and switching between tasks. When executive functioning is still developing or when a child struggles in this area, it can affect their emotional development. For example, a child may find it hard to calm down when upset, wait their turn, or think through the consequences of their actions. Understanding executive functioning can help parents see that challenging behaviours are often linked to developing brain skills rather than intentional misbehaviour, and that children benefit from guidance, structure, and patience as these skills grow over time.
